ABOUT OUR SPONSORS

Dr Dorothea Sandars and Irene Lee - palliative care

The subject matter for this second perpetual Fellowship was an initiative of Ms Irene Lee. In continuing to honour the memory and wishes of Dr Dorothea Sandars, the Fellowship is therefore jointly named. Both Dorothea (was) and Irene (still) are passionate in their support for furthering educational opportunities for all Australians and in encouraging people to excel in their vocation. This Fellowship addresses the subject of palliative care because as has been mentioned earlier, in Dorothea’s later years she was cared for and nurtured by Irene over a long period of time. As a result Irene became very interested in the issue of palliative care. As a nurse Irene is keen to advance the study of methods which enhance and update the skills for the delivery of palliative care. Irene is also an enthusiastic supporter of the performing arts and a Fellowship may occasionally be awarded in this area as well.

Throughout my travels abroad I was constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to live in a country which recognises the benefits of cultural diversity and has a formal process for obtaining knowledge from other cultures.
