The Churchill Trust is governed by an honorary Board of Directors who bring expertise across business, community, government and philanthropy.

The Board oversees the Trust’s strategic direction, financial sustainability and governance, ensuring the organisation remains true to its founding purpose of honouring Sir Winston Churchill’s legacy.

Directors volunteer their time to guide the Fellowship program, strengthen partnerships, and uphold the highest standards of accountability and integrity. Together, they safeguard the Trust’s mission to support Australians to explore global knowledge and bring back ideas that benefit our communities.

Dr Richard Roylance










Dr Richard Roylance

Appointed National Chair 1 February 2025

Dr Roylance is an Eminent Staff Specialist Paediatrician based at Logan Hospital (Brisbane, Queensland).  He has a clinical subspecialty interest in the field of child protection and child abuse prevention, being active in this area at the state, national, and international levels.  He has served on the executive of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) – Child Protection SIG, as President of Protect All Children Today (PACT) for 10 years, and as an Executive Board Member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) for 14 years.

He is an Associate Professor with the School of Medicine, Griffith University in the area of Paediatric Medicine.

Dr Roylance has an appointment as a Sessional Member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) since its inception. He was a long-standing member of QCAT’s previous iterations: the Children’s Services Tribunal and the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal.

He held several senior appointments in government: Chair of the Child Death Review Committee (a Health Minister Advisory Committee) for several years, Deputy Chair of the Coordinating Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect (CCOCA), Chair of the Metro South Human Research Ethics Committee (MS HREC) for four years (having previously served as Deputy-chair), and Paediatric Adviser to Queensland Health for almost a decade.

Dr Roylance was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1995.










Adj. Prof. Fiona Hawthorne










Adj. Prof. Fiona Hawthorne

Adj. Prof Fiona Hawthorne started her career as a Registered Nurse, working through various clinical specialties before moving into nursing and medical education. Since then, she has worked in Healthcare Ethics, Patient Safety, and Clinical Governance.

Adj. Prof Hawthorne was the founding General Manager for Queensland’s only Children’s Hospice, Hummingbird House, a service directly informed by her Churchill Fellowship. She is the Head of College/ CEO for The University of Queensland Union College. Awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2007 and a place in the Global Leadership Practices program in 2018, she is an Adjunct Professor with the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland.

Adj. Prof Hawthorne is Director of Metro Arts, Brisbane.


Geoff Knuckey










Mr Geoff Knuckey

Mr Knuckey’s career has included 32 years with Ernst & Young specialising in the areas of financial statements, auditing and reporting, internal audit, corporate governance, and risk management.

In 2009, Mr Knuckey commenced his current full-time role as a professional director comprising Board non-executive director roles and Audit and Risk Committee positions in the private and public sectors.

Since January 2010, Mr Knuckey has been appointed to a number of private sector boards as either Chair or Non-executive Independent Director. In addition, he has positions as Chair or Independent Member of several Audit and Risk Committees for Federal and ACT Government agencies. This has enabled him to continue with his preference for working in and contributing to organisations in both sectors.

His current and previous appointments in the private sector include roles in financial services, aged care, education, and retail buying groups and his public sector clients vary from a range of large central agencies through to smaller service delivery agencies across a variety of sectors.



Andrew Leake

Mr Leake is a senior business leader with extensive governance and management experience in education, publishing, business consulting and corporate finance. He is a Board Member and immediate past President/Board Chair of Governance Institute of Australia and a Board member of Wenona Foundation Limited.  

Mr Leake’s executive role is Chief Operating Officer of Wenona School, a leading Sydney independent school. 


Tracey McNaughton

Ms McNaughton is a senior executive with extensive investment, funds management and financial markets experience. Ms McNaughton’s executive role is Chief Investment Officer at Escala Partners, a leading wealth management business for ultra-high net worth individuals and not-for-profit institutions, where she oversees a team that manages over $8 billion in financial assets. She is Chair of the Escala Partners Investment Committee and is Chair of the Approved Product List Committee.

Ms McNaughton was a former Research Associate at the Centre for Pensions and Superannuation at the University of NSW and a former Board Committee member with the Investment and Financial Services Association (IFSA) in Sydney.

Ms McNaughton’s commitment to community is demonstrated through her participation in various mentor programs including a previous role as business mentor for the Sydney University Rugby Club.

Judge Morris is the Chief Judge of the Local Court of the Northern Territory.

Judge Morris’s legal career includes work with the Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission and the Office of the Coroner She held various executive positions within the Northern Territory, including Executive Director of Racing, Gaming and Licensing, and Deputy CEO of the Department of Justice. Judge Morris was appointed as a Magistrate to the Northern Territory Magistrates Court in 2010, now the Local Court, and was appointed as Chief Judge of the Local Court in 2019.

Judge Morris currently serves on the Governing Councils of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration, the Australian Judicial Officers Association, the Cultural Diversity Justice Network and the Australian Association of Women Judges.  She also serves on the Northern Territory Law Reform Committee. Her past appointments include Chair of the Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission, Chair of the Northern Territory Community Benefit Fund, Vice President of the Criminal Lawyers Association of the Northern Territory, and as a Councillor for the Law Society.

Judge Morris’ community work has included leadership of various organisations such as NT Scouts, the Darwin Community Legal Centre and the Forster Foundation for Drug Rehabilitation.  She was appointed Second Dormant Commissioner Holder as Acting Administrator of the Northern Territory in 2022.


Prof Jane Munro

Prof Munro is a Paediatric Rheumatologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and leads Arthritis and Rheumatology research and is a Senior Research Fellow at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. 

Prof Munro was the Head of Rheumatology at RCH (2011–20), the national Chair of the Australian Rheumatology Group (2010–15), past Chair of the Victorian Paediatric State Committee and was previously the Senior Medical Adviser COVID-19 Response Division at the Victorian Department of Health.

Prof Munro was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2003.

Colin Murphy

Mr Murphy was the 18th Auditor General for Western Australia for a period of 12 years until 2018.

His career has included senior executive finance and leadership roles across a range of State and Commonwealth government departments in Perth and Washington DC. Mr Murphy serves on a number of Boards including the South Metropolitan Health Service Board WA, ChemCentre WA, the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board and Winja Wajarri Barna Ltd.

Mr Murphy served as a Commissioner with the Perth Casino Royal Commission. He was awarded a Public Service Medal in the Australia Day Honours in 2010.


Shona Reid










Ms Shona Reid

Ms Reid is the SA Guardian for Children and Young People. Ms Reid is a proud Eastern Arrernte Woman, who has lived and worked across South Australia for most of her life.

Ms Reid worked across the child protection, young offending and the out-of-home care sector in predominately regional and remote areas. In recognition of her work across different sectors, Ms Reid received a 2020 Flinders University Distinguished Alumni Award for services to Aboriginal children, young people and families. Prior to taking up the SA Guardian role, Ms Reid was the CEO for Reconciliation South Australia and is currently a director on Aboriginal Hostels Limited.

Until recently, Ms Reid held board positions including the SA Youth Centre Review Board, the South Australian Housing Trust Board (Chairperson of the Aboriginal Advisory Committee to the SAHT Board), Co-Chair of the Justice Reinvestment of South Australia Board, and Flinders University – Indigenous Advisory Council and the Rio Tinto Australian Advisory Group.



Vivienne Thom








Dr Vivienne Thom AM

Dr Thom is an independent consultant in the field of public administration with a focus on integrity and governance.

Dr Thom has previously held the executive positions of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Australian Mint and Commissioner of Patents.

Dr Thom has participated in government audit committees and has been an independent member on a range of other governance boards and committees. Dr Thom has been a member of the ACT Selection Committee for the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust since 2018. She has previously been a member of the IPAA ACT Council, an ACT Division Councillor for the AICD, and a member of the Trans-Tasman IP Attorneys Board. She is a graduate of the AICD Company Directors Course.

In June 2016 Dr Thom was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to public administration through a range of senior roles, and as a mentor to women in executive positions.


Dr Robert Walters

Dr Walters is a practising GP in Hobart, as well as sitting as a part-time member on the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). 

From 2002 to 2005 Dr Walters was the National Chair of the Australian Divisions of General Practice, the Australia-wide organisation that represented local Divisions of General Practice, to which over 90 per cent of practising GPs belonged. Between 1994 and 2015 he was on the Board of his local Division of General Practice, including six years as Chair.
  
Professionally, Dr Walters has a special interest in occupational medicine and workers compensation, and is a long-term director of the WorkCover Board of Tasmania. He has served and continues to serve on a number of national and state Boards and councils representing general practice, including the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Council, the Headspace Board, and previously the Beyondblue Clinical Reference Council, National Advisory Council on Mental Health and National Advisory Council on Suicide Prevention. He was also a National Men’s Health Ambassador, advising the Australian Government on policy relating to male health matters, and Cancer Council of Tasmania Chair from 2001 to 2004.  He has also served on a number of committees for both the RACGP and the AMA, organisations of which he remains a member. 

Dr Walters has served in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) since 1972 and is currently the Senior Medical Officer for the ADF, Tasmania Region, in an Army Reserve capacity, holding the rank of Colonel. From 1985 to 2013 he provided military compensation advice to the ADF in Tasmania and from 1996 to 2013 he was general practice consultant to the Surgeon General of Australian Defence Force. 

Kerrie Williams

Ms Williams is a professional non-executive director who has extensive experience in the financial services and retail sectors, including 20 years as an adviser to institutional investors on investments, risk and governance-related issues.  Ms Williams is currently a non-executive director at U Ethical Investors, a social enterprise and funds management business with an ethical investing approach, where she is also Chair of the Investment Committee. She is also an independent Board member at MAV Insurance, and a member of the Sisters of St John of God Finance Advisory Committee.

Prior to her non-executive career, Ms Williams held a number of senior leadership positions, including as Director of Strategy and People at Frontier Advisors. In 2017, Ms Williams was named the Superannuation Executive of the Year” in the Women in Financial Services Awards.


Dianne Winnard Board

Ms Winnard is a Financial Services Partner at PwC Australia with 18 years of experience providing financial and regulatory assurance to global clients. Her professional background includes significant work in financial audit, as well as compliance and regulatory matters across the financial services sector.

Ms Winnard is a Chartered Financial Analyst and currently serves as a Director on the CFA Society Australia Board. She is also a Chartered Accountant (CA ANZ), a Registered Company Auditor with ASIC, and holds the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing.
