Dr Beau Jayde Cubillo is an Aboriginal (Larrakia and Wadjigan) man who was raised simultaneously on his Grandfathers Country in the community of Bulgul and Garramilla (Darwin). Cubillo from a young age has been taught about the importance of the Indigenous food system as not only a source of nourishment but how it is linked to the social and cultural values that bind his Peoples identity to their Country.
Cubillo has drawn on his personal knowledge and experiences to develop a research portfolio focused on Indigenous food systems contribution to health and wellbeing outcomes from an Indigenous perspective. Cubillo is an advocate for supporting Aboriginal-led and governed food related enterprises within Aboriginal communities. The Churchill Fellowship will enable Cubillo an opportunity to further explore how these concepts can be strengthened with Australia with lessons from North America. Emphasises is placed on community engagement, reciprocity and translation to programs and policy that reflect Indigenous Peoples interest and values.
Cubillo’s leadership capability is recognised through being the recipient of awards such as Larrakia Development Corporation Territory scholarship; Kerin O’Dea award for commitment to Indigenous nutrition; and a Monash University Indigenous Research Scholarship.
Professionally Cubillo holds the position of First Nations Senior Research Fellow at Menzies School of Health Research within the Wellbeing & Preventable Chronic Diseases Division. Cubillo also holds adjunct Research Fellow positions with Deakin University and Monash University.
Cubillo obtained a PhD, Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food, Monash University, 2023, Bachelor of Nutrition (First Class Honours), Monash University 2018 and a Bachelor of Human Nutrition, Flinders University 2016. Cubillo has been an investigator on numerous research grants totalling greater than $5 million and dedicated his career to developing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes, through a lens that centres Indigenous perspectives.
