Brendan is committed to understanding, addressing and promoting public health concerns that contribute to disadvantage and marginalisation for certain population sub-groups and the wider community.
To this end, Brendan’s academic and public service career over nearly two decades has primarily involved collecting and analysing high quality data to produce evidence-based practice and policy particularly related to blood-borne viruses, sexually transmissible infections, and alcohol and other drug use and related harms. Other research interests include psychological health and wellbeing, family violence, social connectedness and support, and health service literacy.
Brendan has occupied research and program roles in Australia and internationally at academic, non-profit and government agencies. In 2013, Brendan was the recipient of an Australian Government‐funded Endeavour Executive Award to work with the Research Triangle Institute’s Urban Health Program (San Francisco) to investigate post-prison linkage to treatment for people living with HIV. In 2016, Brendan received a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship to research intersections between methamphetamine use and HIV transmission among men of colour who have sex with men at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Brendan has a PhD in Epidemiology from Monash University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne. He is currently the Principal Blood Borne Virus and Sexually Transmitted Infection Epidemiologist for Victoria and an Adjunct Research Fellow with the Burnet Institute. Brendan has also worked as a consultant for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to investigate transnational organised crime (e.g., drug production and trafficking, weapons and people smuggling) in the Asia-Pacific region.
Brendan has been a co-investigator on successful NHMRC grants totally more than $6 million, and he continues undertaking impactful research and translation via collaborations with Australian researchers on novel studies and publications in the public health realm.
