Eliza Munro

Eliza is a proud mother of five and spiritual woman from the Gamilaroi Nation. Raised on Wonnarua Country, Eliza calls Maitland NSW home. 

Eliza is a Sorry Business Consultant and Managing Director of Ngiyani Wandabaa, with over twenty-years background in Indigenous health contributing to the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Spending the last eight-years in palliative care education and training, Eliza is passionate about supporting the returning to Spirit journey and enhancing culturally safe and responsive end-of-life care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families. Eliza holds experience developing and delivering palliative care education through workshops and online learnings, resource development and providing cultural consultancy for various national palliative care projects. 

Drawing motivation from lived experience of not knowing loved-one’s wishes and being unprepared for Sorry Business, Eliza is also committed to enhancing death literacy within First Nations communities. Possessing knowledge of death systems and supports, being prepared and communicating wishes can ease the worries of end of life decision-making, allowing individuals and families to focus on emotional needs and honouring cultural obligations during such times. The absence of death knowledge, planning ahead and not sharing wishes causes arguments and dysfunction among families, intensifying Sorry Business responsibilities, funeral poverty and exacerbates grieving for vulnerable families and communities already grappling with historical and contemporary traumas. 

By Exploring Death and Dying in First Nations Communities globally, Eliza seeks to apply relevant learnings to develop culturally grounded death literacy education and resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. 

Eliza is an End-of-life Biographer, advisory member of the End-of-Life Law for Clinicians National Project, 2023 Palliative Care Queensland Award Winner for Outstanding Achievement in Palliative Care for First Nations Communities (IPEPA Team) and one of six Founding Directors of, and the initial concept creator behind the establishment of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Palliative Care Association.
