Jim Deering has been involved in blacksmithing since the late 1980’s. Initially he developed an interest in working hot metal as a knife-maker. He has continued to develop his skills in blacksmithing, having these skills formally recognised by completing tertiary training in the trade and is passionate about learning and promoting the skills of the blacksmith to a wider audience.
Jim was awarded the Park Family Churchill Fellowship to learn the syllabi and methods of blacksmith training organisations and individuals.
Jim is enthusiastic about training people in traditional hand and power forging techniques. As a qualified workplace trainer and assessor, Jim has created a number of blacksmithing short courses, which are available to promote these skills to a wider audience as part of his business, Wilkur Forge.
In the near future, as circumstances permit, Jim will finalise planning for the travel phase of his Fellowship. This will include visiting blacksmithing training facilities in the UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Italy.
