Professor Marc Ruitenberg is the Director of Biomedical Research at Mater Research and an internationally recognised leader in neuroinflammation research. He is regarded as one of Australia’s leading spinal cord injury researchers, working at the interface of discovery science and clinical translation. At Mater, Marc co-leads the Neuroimmunology and Stroke Research Group at Mater Research with clinician-scientist Dr. Andrew Swayne, leveraging clinical insight and advanced research approaches to understand how the immune and nervous systems interact, and to redefine the role of inflammation in conditions affecting the brain and spinal cord.
Marc’s career has been shaped by a willingness to question established thinking – including his own – and to follow the evidence wherever it leads. His research has helped transform views on post-injury inflammation – away from a uniformly harmful response to a process that can be strategically targeted to protect and repair the injured central nervous system. His work has translated into real‑world impact through a world‑first clinical trial for acute spinal cord injury.
Marc’s Churchill Fellowship enabled him to deepen his expertise in studying neuroinflammation and cell–cell interactions, and to perform live imaging of the injured spinal cord, monitoring fluorescently labelled immune cells in real time to examine their role in neuropathology and repair.
