Meg Plaster is an impassioned nurse who gets fulfilment when working to advocate for the under-represented. She has successfully built services that are genuinely informed by the people who will use them. With over 30 years of nursing, in clinical, management, research and service development roles, she understands the privilege of having education and knowledge, and the power that comes from being informed about choices.
Meg believes that people should have the opportunity to be active participants in their health care decision-making, particularly at pivotal points in their lives. She strives to give voice and knowledge to consumers in the complex health care system.
Meg has led the development of two state-wide services. Her extensive experience working in cancer informed the development of the award-winning WA Youth Cancer Service; one of her most proud career achievements. More recently, implementing the new Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation in one the largest metropolitan health services in Perth, has been the most humbling of her professional experiences. She has been inspired by the courage of people making this choice, alongside the selfless compassion of those who support them. She feels privileged to work with those who have stepped forth into this new field to help people achieve their final wishes, as they navigate their own mortality. The challenges in this polarising work have commanded Meg to draw on her empathy, respect for individual choice and patience, as she supports colleagues to examine their own position in the work of supporting people make choices at the end of their lives.
Drawing on her nursing and counselling degrees and clinical service experience, Meg works to authentically engage stakeholders to shape the development of person-centred services and hear all perspectives. She holds a Diploma of Health Science (Nursing), an Honours Degree in Cancer Nursing from Manchester University and a Master of Counselling from University of Notre Dame Australia.
