Musonga Mbogo

I’m a self-taught African-Australian visual artist. My career began on the unceded Ngunnawal and Ngambri lands of Canberra, shaped by the influence of my Tanzanian father, Zimbabwean mother, and the Australian schoolyard. My work is grounded in reimagining Australian art through a diasporic lens, celebrating themes of ambition, identity, and cultural belonging.

At 26, I became one of the few African-Australian artists in Australia’s history to gain gallery representation. I’ve collaborated with organisations including Nike, Triple J, The Canberra Hospital, Sydney Theatre Company, ABC News and RUSSH. I started my career with limited resources and understand the barriers young creatives from multicultural backgrounds often face.

Attaining visibility in the arts has always driven my practice. As a child, I longed to see a visual artist who looked like me on TV—someone who could show me it was possible. In 2024, I found those role models in London, meeting a community of successful multicultural artists building something powerful together.

Inspired by that vision, I returned to Australia and started local Art Clubs—monthly spaces where artists and art lovers from diverse backgrounds come together to collaborate, network and learn. We provide art supplies, and the spaces are growing fast, making a positive impact on the creative culture in cities across Australia.

Art Club is now a space to celebrate Australia’s multicultural identity while supporting and upskilling emerging talent. It challenges the idea that artists must succeed alone and instead creates a thriving, connected creative community that will strengthen Australia’s arts culture for generations to come.

My Fellowship will explore ways to create more community pathways for multicultural visual artists to succeed in Australia. As an African-Australian artist, I’ve seen how rarely our stories are represented in galleries and institutions, and how few safe spaces exist for our voices. I hope to build on these ideas to expand the work already underway in Australia, creating more opportunities and stronger support for multicultural creatives.
