Nhi Nguyen

I grew up watching my parents build a life from very little after fleeing Vietnam by boat. What they taught me is that people can achieve remarkable things when they're given the conditions to thrive. That belief has quietly driven my career in medicine.

I trained as an intensive care specialist because ICU asks the most of a clinical team — split-second judgment, deep trust between colleagues and constant adaptation. Over two decades at Nepean Hospital, that work has taught me something I keep returning to: our clinicians bring extraordinary skill and commitment, and NSW Health genuinely does invest in hearing from them. Yet even with that goodwill, the size and complexity of the system can still make it hard for frontline ideas to shape how care is designed.

COVID brought this into sharp focus for me. Supporting the state's pandemic response meant translating clinical reality during a period of uncertainty and watching capable teams navigate extraordinary pressure within a system doing its best to keep pace. It left me with a lasting curiosity about what allows engagement to become genuine partnership.

Today, as Clinical Co-Chair of the Health System Advisory Council, I help convene frontline clinicians and senior leaders each month. Over the past year I've also led a listening tour across NSW and what I've heard reinforces that the foundations here are already strong — the opportunity now is to build on them.

That's what draws me to this Fellowship. I want to learn, directly and practically, from health systems that have taken clinician partnership further, and bring back lessons that strengthen what NSW Health has already started.

My hope is simple: in the future, clinicians continue to shape a system that earns their trust, and, in doing so, truly serves the community.
