Rachael Hocking is a Warlpiri woman from Lajamanu in the Northern Territory. Rachael started her career as a stringer for the Koori Mail, before committing to more than six years with SBS and NITV as a journalist and presenter. She left full-time journalism in 2021, becoming an editor and trainer in First Nations-led programs. Her focus now is on other forms of storytelling and sharing skills with the next generation.
Rachael previously served three years as a director with the Dart Centre for Journalism and Trauma in the Asia Pacific and continues to advocate for trauma-informed reporting in Indigenous communities. She also served a three-year term as a director on the board for Common Ground, an organisation with sovereign First Nations storytelling at its core.
Rachael is currently completing her postgraduate studies as a 2024 Atlantic Fellow for Social Equity where she is developing a social change project to co-design journalism training with First Nations media organisations.
Rachael was awarded a joint-Fellowship with Cait McMahon. A joint Fellowship is for applicants who have a project on issues that affect Australian First Nations peoples that is justifiably strengthened by having at least one Indigenous Australian’s perspective on the topic.
