Rod Hannifrey is passionate about trucking and road safety. He has a Graduate Certificate in Road Safety from the Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety and is very active in the trucking industry, with nearly 6 million kilometres at the wheel. He is currently a full-time interstate b-double driver otherwise known as a “Road Transport and Road Safety Advocate”. Rod is also an Ambassador for “Health in Gear, President of the National Road Freighters Association and President of the Newell Highway and Dubbo Bypass Alliance. He has contributed to the Heavy Vehicle National Law review, Senate Inquiry into a Safe and Viable Road Transport Industry and previous similar inquires. He received the 2000 National Professional Driver of the Year Award and has twice been nominated since then, and again became a finalist. In 2016 he was awarded a Highly Commended at the 2016 ACRS Road Safety awards for his efforts. For over 20 years Rod has pushed the simple cheap and effective program of marking informal truck rest areas with green reflectors, a project recently recognised in the new Guidelines for HV Rest area design. He has also been involved in seeking more and better truck rest areas. For the past 21 years he has been a columnist for Owner Driver magazine. Since 2019 you can hear him every Tuesday morning at 1 am, taking calls etc on the Triple M “Nightshift” national radio program. He also writes a near weekly blog, commenced for his Fellowship project and continued ever since. He has set up, designed the curtains for the trailers, and managed the TRUCKRIGHT Industry Vehicle project for over 12 years, with a new one on the road in the next few months. The TIV attends industry events and carries passengers to allow them to see and feel the on road issues truckies face. Rod was also involved in a video trucking program “TRUCK That Australia”, and produced other videos about truck rest areas, “Truckies Top Tips for Sharing the Road” and “Truckies Top Tips for Sharing the road with caravans”. These videos are available at www.whitelinetv.com.au under the Trucking Nation tab, and through his LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook page entitled “Australia’s National Highway or National Disgrace”. Through another Facebook page he provides weekly audio book reviews entitled “Audiobooks for the Road”.
