Sally Gainsbury is the Director of Australia’s only university-affiliated gambling treatment and research clinic, Professor in the School of Psychology, and Chief Investigator of the Technology Addiction Team at the Brain and Mind Centre, University of Sydney. She holds a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology and a PhD in Psychology and has over 20 years’ experience conducting gambling research.
Sally’s research focuses on understanding gambling and the impact of technology on gambling to inform the development and evaluation of gambling harm-minimisation strategies, resources, and policies. Her studies have been fundamental to the understanding of the distinct harms related to Internet gambling, including the risks associated with offshore and illegal gambling. Her research has been pivotal in the implementation of harm-minimisation strategies utilising technology including for online gambling and electronic gaming machines.
Her research excellence and contribution to the wider community has been recognised with numerous awards and fellowships recognising not only her outstanding research, but her leadership within the field including efforts to ensure that research findings are translated to inform policy and practice and reach the general community. Sally’s research is highly applied, and she works with all stakeholders including policy makers and regulators, industry operators, community groups and treatment providers and consumers engaged with gambling and the broader community.
She is regularly invited to give keynote and plenary presentations to a broad range of stakeholders internationally including regulators, policy makers, industry, community and health professionals and academics. She has provided expert input for policy makers and key stakeholders in Australia and internationally and served on numerous advisory boards.
Her career aim is to conduct collaborative research to advance harm minimisation and prevention efforts in the addiction and gambling fields and contribute to the well-being of society by informing practice and policy.
