I've always been passionate about Australia's unique wildlife. As I learnt more about the challenges facing many of our native species, that passion grew into a commitment to conservation. I wanted my work to contribute to better conservation outcomes for Australia's native species. That goal continues to shape the work I do today.

During my undergraduate studies, I took part in field-based conservation projects and saw how research could influence species management. It made me realise I wanted to build a career generating knowledge that could improve conservation decisions. I also discovered I enjoyed the challenge of field research and collecting evidence.

For almost a decade, I have researched platypuses with the University of New South Wales and Taronga Conservation Society Australia. During that time, I have captured and sampled more than 600 wild platypuses, contributing to research on their distribution, health, behaviour, and conservation. Throughout my career, I have sought to bridge research and conservation practice by generating evidence that informs conservation management.

Over time, I've learnt that effective conservation is built on collaboration. Working alongside researchers, wildlife managers, zoos, government agencies and local communities has shown me that the best conservation outcomes come from bringing different perspectives together. I've also learnt that meaningful conservation rarely comes easily, but every challenge has reinforced what a privilege it is to contribute to the future of such a remarkable species.

I’m increasingly motivated by improving how freshwater wildlife is monitored and managed. Climate change, drought, and river regulation are placing increasing pressure on Australia's waterways, creating an urgent need for practical, evidence-based conservation.

Through a Churchill Fellowship, I hope to learn from international leaders tackling these challenges and bring that knowledge back to Australia to develop conservation strategies that improve outcomes for platypuses and other freshwater species.
