My sons are a driving force behind my work in community safety. I want to help create a safer future for them and for the broader community, and I don’t want to look back and regret not taking an opportunity to make important change when it presented itself.
At 18, I was drawn to Tasmania Police by a desire to work outdoors and as part of a larger team. That initial motivation led to a career in policing, during which I’ve been exposed to countless incidents, both traumatic and awe-inspiring, and have met remarkable people across the community and industry. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside people whose passion and expertise have driven meaningful change, and their example has shaped my own approach to policing.
In 2017, I coordinated a nation-first project using electronic monitoring devices on high-risk family violence offenders. The program resulted in an 80 per cent reduction in reoffending among participants and remains one of my proudest career achievements. More recently, as part of my role within Tasmania Police, I was appointed Chair of the National Illicit Firearms Working Group, bringing together key stakeholders from Australian government agencies to coordinate action to combat illicit firearms and minimise their threat to the community.
These experiences have reinforced my belief that effective policing requires us to anticipate emerging threats, learn from others and continually look for better ways to protect our communities.
A Churchill Fellowship would give me the opportunity to build on this experience by examining how other countries are responding to the growing threat of 3D-printed firearms. As Chair of the National Illicit Firearms Working Group, I am well positioned to bring these international insights back to Australia and contribute to a coordinated response. By understanding what has worked, what has not, and why, I hope to help ensure Australia is better prepared to address this emerging challenge and keep our communities safe.
