As founder and Honorary Chairperson of the Management Committee of Second Harvest (Australia) since 1982, I was awarded a 1989 Churchill Fellowship to study non-profit community enterprises providing food for people on low income in the USA, Canada and the UK.

The objectives of Second Harvest (Australia) are:

  • To obtain a supply of food including surplus products form growers, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers and distribute them to community food centres and welfare agencies
  • Assist in the development of community based food centres
  • Promote policies based on social justice principles that address the causes of poverty.

Second Harvest, through its constitution and participatory structures, enables individuals, community organizations and food centres to be involved in all levels of its operation and management. It is unique in Australia in terms of its scale, method of operation and participation of low income people. Over 300 volunteers are involved throughout the organization.
