To study the management and marketing of tourism in wilderness areas - Canada, USA, Norway

Simon’s Fellowship allowed him to study the management and marketing of tourism in wilderness lodges operating in short seasons in Alaska, Canada and Norway. He came away with an overwhelming sense of the importance of simple offerings, great guides, and exclusivity in these extraordinary places.

He has gone on to become the visionary and developer behind some of Tasmania’s and Australia’s most celebrated tourism experiences – including Cradle Mountain Lodge, Franklin Manor, Strahan Village, Gordon River Cruises, Peppermint Bay, Hobart Cruises, and his latest venture, Pumphouse Point – a stunning wilderness retreat inside the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Simon’s focus on excellence in the tourism experience, particularly the wilderness, the food and the beverages, is now synonymous with the Tasmanian brand. He is a strong advocate for everyone’s right to access wilderness areas, and has not shied away from battling the views of those he sees as extremist groups who advocate locking it all away. At a time when political correctness dictated a single view, Simon was prepared to fight for the alternative view – that wilderness and parks should be accessible to all.

In recognition of his contribution to the tourism industry, particularly his strong advocacy for product and service excellence, Simon was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2001 and was named Tasmanian of the Year in 2004. In 2006 Simon was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia.

On a personal level, Simon has actively pursued his sports: skiing, flying, motor sports, scuba diving and martial arts; and he continues to enjoy sailing, fishing, off-road quad biking, and managing his acreage south of Hobart.
