To study developments in community based arts projects - UK

I spent my time on the Fellowship primarily in England and Wales, but I extended my travel to European countries to further investigate arts festivals.

It seems a long time ago and I have now been retired for five years; but that time in my life was very exciting and challenging. New experiences, new contacts and a whole new world of learning stayed with me throughout my career and into retirement.

From working in the arts in Tasmania I took a position in Brisbane in cultural development, then went to the Australia Council, based in Sydney, and finally to the Noosa Council to establish Creative Noosa.

Since retiring I’ve been involved in the organisation of an annual literary festival, and other writing projects. I am a board member of a few organisations, including Creative Ageing and Q-earth (arts, environment and heritage) and I am an active member of Friends of the Noosa Botanical Gardens. The latter involves a weekly workout in the gardens – weeding, pruning and potting; the former keeps me in touch with my interests in the arts and community.

Travel has been another passion. My first big overseas travel was with the Fellowship and I haven’t stopped since. Backpacking in foreign countries and living with different cultures is a great learning experience; although my backpacking days are over, I continue to travel and still enjoy it.

I feel my career choices and the activities I’ve been involved in have been very much influenced by the Fellowship I received way back in 1985. While the Fellowship was for a specific part of my professional work, the benefits also influenced my personal development.
