To study broad-acre medicinal herb production and export marketing - USA, France, UK

‘The greatest song of the land is the food it produces,’ wrote Eric Rolls, Australian farmer-philosopher and prolific writer. Victorian herb farmer, Christina Hindhaugh OAM visited herb farms, nurseries and processing plants in France, Britain and the United States on her 1998 Churchill Fellowship, connecting with importers and wholesalers, research scientists and herb growing consultants.

Observing that demand for both culinary and medicinal herbs was expanding world-wide and that current supply was often inferior in quality, she saw that ‘this presents real opportunities for Australian farmers interested in growing herbs’.

Once back in Australia, Christina expanded her farm across three broad acre farming properties with 25 hectares of hand-planted rosemary bushes – about 170,000 in all. Glenelg River Rosemary, the farm she co-founded, is Australia’s largest supplier of rosemary. She also grows smaller quantities of sage, thyme and oregano. All herbs are available fresh or dried, and in small or bulk amounts.
