In the USA Lynn travelled to a number of varied museums or interpretation centres. She visited Indianapolis (the largest children’s museum in the world) and Massachusetts (a range of science interpretation and interactive museums); she also visited the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee.

In the UK she visited the key London museums, the Beamish Museum of the Living, the Liverpool Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

This trip was an ideal opportunity to experience cutting-edge ideas about how to engage with the ‘end user’. Lynn spoke with museum curators, experienced interactive displays herself and observed end-user reactions. She learnt that the amount of text presented on a piece of paper, a computer screen or an exhibition storyboard needs to be given a great deal of thought, and that blank space has value – as do the accompanying visual materials and other ways to stimulate the senses.

More than 15 years later Lynn still employs the principles learnt on the trip, using new Web-based technologies/ platforms, and searching for innovative ways of presenting information to enthuse, excite and entice end users to engage with it.

Lynn currently works at the University of Tasmania. She is interested in the intersect of unique, rare and special materials with new technologies, and in maximising discoverability of traditional printed resources on the Web through publishing on metadata and object file repositories. She is active in managing a range of arts-humanities-science projects at the University. In her leisure Lynn collects 19th-century and early 20th-century Tasmaniana objects, and loves gardening.
