Morley Grainger is a narrative artist from Toowoomba in Queensland. Her work ‘is at the nexus of Australian social history and visual art textiles, an unusual combination … in the early 1990s and an isolating place to be in the Australian contemporary art world’.

Morley represents a historical event or piece of social history in story panels composed of textiles. She produces a unique work, which is exhibited in schools, galleries and community halls in urban and regional towns. Her remarkable creations tell Australians some of their history. Morley describes the process of how she creates these arresting history tableaux as ‘a dance between the possibilities of the materials and the vision in the artist’s mind’.

Morley’s 2002 Churchill Fellowship took her to the United Kingdom and the United States to research narrative art and to connect with similar artists. The theme of connection is a strong thread running through Morley Grainger’s work. She wrote, ‘Attaining a Churchill Fellowship was a vindication of my approach to telling our stories of both adversity and triumph.’

Her Fellowship broke down the isolation of working with an unusual art form in a regional area. ‘The experience was immensely enriching and will revitalise my future work,’ Morley writes in her report. She writes that the trip provided her with a network of a new artistic family and the collaborative processes that will ‘reap great benefits for me, my fellow artist and my wider community.’ This proved to be the case.
