In 2003 Margaret Sietsma Smith, from Queensland, gained a Churchill Fellowship to travel to France and the United States to investigate choreographic performances by leading international dancers. She concluded that the professional dance industry in Australia is ‘severely under-resourced’ and that ‘the wealth of emerging talent we have in this country is unable to be supported or even encouraged.’

Reinvigorating dance in Australia, Margaret writes, requires government commitment financially and philosophically. ‘This happened in France in the 1980s and the French dance artists and companies are today leading the world in all areas of dance.’
