Philip Brown, an ACT Churchill Fellow from 2007, believes that the Churchill Trust should be acknowledged for its moral leadership on the issue of child abuse over the last 20 years. Philip’s Churchill Fellowship topic was sexual abuse prevention for people with intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder.

Philip travelled to the United States and Canada to discuss his topic with experts in the field. Children with poor communication skills are more vulnerable to child abuse. Social safety training strategies based on behavioural psychology are essential for children – and for those older – with an intellectual disability or who are on the autism spectrum, because of the difficulties they have with communication. Philip aimed to use his Fellowship to improve training strategies for implementing the SoSAFE! Program, which helps those with an intellectual disability to communicate effectively – including how to report abuse.

Philip points out that the Churchill Trust’s record of awarding Fellowships to people investigating the issue of child abuse highlights the relevance and social engagement of the Trust.
