To study approaches to community sport and recreation infrastructure provision - Canada

Linton Kerber was an inspirational and courageous Tasmanian.

He dedicated his life to teaching people about health and fitness, which eventually took him to Canada on his Churchill Fellowship. But the trip was cut short when a visit to the doctor changed his life. Linton was told he had a brain tumour and most likely had only six–12 months to live. This was a man who lived for exercise and the outdoors, and had no warning that anything was wrong.

Linton’s Fellowship was hugely important to him. He fought to the end to finish his report, titled Essential Places and Spaces, about innovative new approaches to health and fitness for Tasmanians. He presented his report to the other Fellows on 21 August – and died on 11 September, aged 47, ten months after he was diagnosed.

Linton was instrumental in the establishment of the Diploma of Management – Recreation Planning – and in recognition of his work, an award for top students has been established in his name.

In Linton’s own words: ‘I greatly enjoyed the Fellowship – despite the circumstances that overtook my study. I managed to get two excellent weeks of study in Edmonton and Calgary – with numerous meetings with colleagues in the recreation field – including numerous visits to recreation facilities and the Alberta Recreational and Parks Association Conference in Jasper (which was excellent) as a result I have fantastic contacts in the field over there that will continue to feed me information on a variety of topics they were marvellous people who were extremely generous with their time and experience.’
