Recommendations

  1. Health and Education jointly develop a statewide evidence based strategy to collaboratively address the issues of Otitis Media (OM) and Conductive Hearing Loss (CHL) in Aboriginal communities and schools.
  2. Principals and classroom teachers have access to quality CHL and OM resources, specialist support, professional learning materials and training.
  3. Priority is given to addressing the issue that many Aboriginal children are not screened or receiving the necessary follow up treatment to reduce the prevalence and impact of OM and subsequent CHL.
  4. The implementation of explicit and ongoing community awareness strategies delivered in the Education and Health context to promote the issues associated with OM and CHL.
  5. The training of local community staff such as Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (or similar positions) as liaison officers between the school, education specialists and health specialists.
  6. The responsibility and training is provided to a school member for amplification equipment management and maintenance.
  7. The creation of an OM and CHL records management system that is accessible by Health and Education with case management
