To investigate approaches to assist pregnant women to stop smoking and remain smoke free after giving birth - New Zealand, Canada, UK, Sweden, Italy

My six-week Fellowship included visits to programs that support women to use pregnancy as a window of opportunity to become smoke-free.

The biggest difference I noted between Australia and the countries I visited was the prevalence of really active, innovative, targeted outreach-based support for pregnant women to become smoke-free.

In Australia, I believe, we have great legislation – we lead the world in legislative reforms such as plain packaging, but we fall down in our provision of innovative and flexible support for people to become smoke- free. The particular needs of pregnant women in tobacco cessation are not adequately addressed in Australia, nor are specific cultural needs.

My Fellowship has led me to formulate a list of promising approaches that I think need strong consideration in Tasmania. This list informed A Smoke Free Start for Every Tasmanian Baby:

  • The use of Carbon Monoxide Monitors in routine antenatal care
  • Ongoing training for midwives in:
  • Risks of smoking in pregnancy
  • Solution-focused, strengths-based, motivational interviewing
  • Smoke-free language
  • An Incentives Pilot
  • Incorporation of strategies focused on social justice into our work with young people
  • Establishment of a pregnancy-specific smoke-free Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with an outreach focus
  • Strategies that support partners of pregnant women who smoke.

Since my Fellowship I have become the President of the International Network of Women Against Tobacco. My passion continues to burn for gender justice in Tobacco Control.
