To explore models and the benefits of Indigenous tourism on Protected Areas - Canada, USA, Mexico, Peru, Brazil
Download

Major Lessons Learnt:

  • During my travels to Peru, Bolivia, USA and Mexico I experienced a broad range of different models of Indigenous tourism and was exposed to the many benefits and pitfalls of Indigenous tourism. This in turn made it possible for me to propose recommendations and develop strategies for best practices of Indigenous tourism on IPAs in Australia.
  • I encountered four different models of Indigenous tourism; Indigenous employed model, jointly managed model, full ownership model and the hub model.
  • The success of many Indigenous tourism enterprises was heavily influenced by the political agenda and legislative framework underpinning each nation. For example Bolivia’s President is Indigenous and has passed many by-laws and legislation that protect Indigenous culture and promote Indigenous tourism. This differs greatly from Peru where the Government does not support Indigenous enterprise and Indigenous Communities have to depend heavily on non for profit organisations to gain entry to the market.
  • The study abroad enabled me to propose recommendations and develop strategies for better practice tourism on IPAs which fall under the categories of; Marketing, Capacity building, environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, developing partnerships, social/ community engagement, business planning, and visitor management

Implementation and dissemination:

Findings and strategies developed will be disseminated to the Indigenous Protected Areas network through presentations at Community advisory committee meetings and at relevant events/forums such as the annual IPA mangers meeting.
