The Leslie (Les) J. Fleming Churchill Fellowship to study the application of polymer-gold composite nanoparticles to cancer treatment at the Davy Faraday Research Laboratory - UK
Download

My Leslie (Les) J. Fleming Churchill Fellowship enabled me to travel to the United Kingdom to work at the University College London Healthcare Biomagnetic and Nanomaterials Laboratory.

This gave me the opportunity to meet with many world renowned researchers in the field of nanomedicine with whom I was able to discuss my project and its potential. Additionally, I was able to work with Prof. Thanh Nguyen and her research team in the laboratory. This was an excellent learning experience as I learned new techniques in both wet chemistry and particle characterisation which will prove invaluable to my research in Australia. I was also given the opportunity to use their unique Magnetic AC Hyperthermia (MACH) machine which allowed me to examine the heating properties of my particles in response to an alternating magnetic field.

Throughout my fellowship I was exploring the development of novel polymer‐nanoparticle composites for use in stimuli responsive controllable drug delivery. These nanocomposites would have the potential to carry cancer drugs in an inert form to a specific location within the body; once the nanocomposites reach the cancerous site there is potential for them to release the drug in response to an external stimulus (such as an alternating magnetic field). This gives us the capability to concentrate the toxic anti‐cancer drugs around the cancerous tissue, thereby minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This novel drug delivery system would be used to improve the efficacy of cancer treatment by minimizing the harmful side effects of the cancer drugs and by offering heightened drug concentration around cancerous cells.
