Conclusions and recommendations

Marine borders are fluid making prevention and controls appear harder, but this is no different from air-borne invasive species in the terrestrial environment – it can be done. Prevention, early detection and controlling the spread at the early stages of a pest outbreak are the most effective and cost efficient management approaches. One of the most critical times in an invasion cycle are natural cues and thresholds of non-outbreak periods. Until we understand this dynamic, we wont know what triggers an outbreak. Therefore, dedicated long-term research that survives the ‘hype’ of an outbreak through and into non-outbreak periods is needed. Developing value and risk maps and subsequently creating threat footprints will be invaluable to direct efforts and understand which reefs require action. To support this integrated approach, a secure and ready resource model is needed. This requires leadership and partnerships with reef users, researchers government and private enterprise. Lessons learned from my fellowship are being incorporated into an integrated management framework for the crown-of-thorns starfish, to be led by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Results from this fellowship have formed the basis of a scientific publication to be submitted to the internationally recognised journal Managing Biological Invasions.
