The Mr and Mrs Gerald Frank New Churchill Fellowship to find previously unpublished piano works by master composers, edit and make them available for teaching and performance in the form of modern critical editions - Russia, Germany
Download

During research for my PhD thesis (2011–2013), I became aware of the number of unpublished works by master composers in archives in Europe, and in particular in Russia.

The sheer volume of these unknown works in various archival collections is startling, considering the quality, applicability to current performance and pedagogical practice as well as the historical significance of these works.

This Fellowship was a continuation of my work in this field: identifying unpublished piano works by European composers, editing and typesetting these works, making them available to the ever growing community of professional musicians, teachers, students, scholars and music lovers.

I initially planned to visit six libraries to examine works by Nikolai Medtner, Alexander Glazunov and Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach; however, as I began to research, I was directed to other collections by librarians and through finding chance information about other composers and works in various registers and catalogues.

Thus examining a newly released thematic catalogue of the works of J. C. F. Bach, I found that a copy of the first edition of a set of six keyboard concertos was housed in the British Library, which was not one of the collections I investigated in my preliminary research. As these concertos have not been published since then, and no piano reduction exists, they have never been performed or recorded. Fortunately, it was possible to order scans of this edition from the British Library without visiting it.

I visited seven archival collections in person and undertook an intensive study of the relevant collections in five of these. In the process of looking for works by the composers that formed the initial focus of my research, a number of works by other composers in the possession of the archives were incidentally examined and found to be previously unpublished. Among these are works by: Sergei Prokofiev (unpublished works from his childhood and several fragments from his conservatorium years); Nikolai Myaskovsky; and Peter Schenk.
