To broaden my knowledge through exposure to current theatre practice in Europe - UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Norway
Download

The purpose of this fellowship was to enlighten me as to current theatre practice in Europe with particular focus on the work of outstanding female theatre directors, in order to enrich and challenge my own practice as theatre director and provide a benchmark for reflection of my own practice.  Consequently I viewed forty-two varied productions, met with directors or associates of the major companies concerned, and was able to appreciate how foreign practitioners inform current trends within Australian theatre-‐direction.

I am a theatre director and currently a resident director with the Queensland Theatre Company. I have developed my practice as director over the last ten years since returning to Brisbane from Sydney where I had lived since 1980. This development was assisted by an Arts Queensland fellowship, with support from Queensland Theatre Company, La Boite Theatre Company and through my practice led doctoral studies (DCI QUT).

I began my career as an actor, having graduated from NIDA in 1985, and worked extensively in theatre, film, television and radio. I have acted with most of the major theatre companies in Australia, in many Australian television series and in a number of feature films. I am also a teacher, having introduced the acting technique Practical Aesthetics to Australia in 1994 and co-‐founding Practical Aesthetics Australia, the Sydney Annex of the Atlantic Theatre Company of New York. I teach at NIDA, WAAPA, QUT and in private practice.

I wished to experience a broad cross-section of theatre, both text-based and directorled, in order to both gauge and provoke my own practice. One can only determine the success and relevance of one’s work when considered in a broad field. Whilst I am literate in current Australian practice I felt it was important to test my practice within a broader palette. The opportunities that the fellowship provided were greater than I had imagined and the lessons often surprising. With four productions on the slate for 2015, I will be utilizing this invaluable experience in my current work and will continue to benefit from it well into the future.
