HIGHLIGHT

The knowledge of what can be achieved when health services partner with governments, universities and non-government organisations to improve the quality of life of people who are both homeless and living with advanced illness.

MAJOR LESSONS LEARNED

 Co-ordinated efforts from health services, government, non-government and housing services can address the under-met area of palliation for people who are both homeless and living with life limiting illness. It is entirely possible, that parallel, effective services can be built in Australia.

 Dedication to clinical education of both colleagues in mainstream tertiary hospital settings as well as students in health areas (medicine, nursing and allied health) and people from within homeless services develop strong links with homeless services and build a future workforce.

 There is a key role of evidence-based research, alongside practice, in the area of health care for people who are homeless. Sound research optimizes the care of individuals and ensures care is highly cost effective.

 Medium to long-term financial commitments at state and federal government levels is an investment in the economic future of a country, as well as addressing the plight of highly vulnerable individuals.

 Developing links with key providers already working in this area overseas, to enable efficient transfer of evidence-based practice to Australia is essential. These experienced colleagues generously look forward to ongoing contact, as we develop relevant services in Australia.
