The keys areas identified and requiring change are:

  • Occupant evacuation lifts.
  • Fire and Life Safety Rating (B-FLSR) system aimed at improving fire safety standards in both old and new buildings.
  • Improved methods of communication during emergencies in buildings.
  • Availability of more than 1 means of escape from all buildings.

This report is influenced by 22 years of experience as a professional, operational fire officer in a major Australian city. Additional experience within the building approval system and building fire safety unit in Queensland, Australia have equipped me with significant knowledge on building fire safety. My view of building fire safety and the desire to implement safety improvements is heavily influenced by my experiences of firefighting at structure fires and witnessing the impact on both the occupants and my fellow firefighters. After personally witnessing the severe impact on the local Grenfell community and my fellow firefighters it became very evident that major safety improvements are urgently required.
