Recommendations

  1. That Queensland Health explore the use of high technology, such as the Lokomat and antigravity treadmills, to supplement usual physiotherapy for inpatients.
  2. That the gold standard of 3-dimensional gait analysis, recognised in Australia since the 1990’s for paediatric patients, be extended to adult patients following the practices already adopted overseas
  3. That Queensland Health enable the current clinical gait analysis facilities at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital attain CMLA accreditation
  4. That Queensland Health support a joint submission from RBWH and Qld Children’s Hospital to public and private health funds and major compensable bodies, e.g. the Motor Accident Insurance Commission, to attain fund per service.
  5. Utilising the international civilian and military network that Dr Robyn Grote acquired from her Churchill Fellowship, the stakeholders listed above, supplemented by pertinent manufacturers, fund a state-wide symposium on the use of digital technology for physical and psychological rehabilitation.
  6. Dr Robyn Grote initiate a 5-year development and implementation plan, including lobbying of the international community, to enable Brisbane to be the first southern hemisphere location to host the biennial conference called Rehab Week. This conference hosts input from the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society, the International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics, the International Industry Society in Advanced Rehabilitation Technology, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America. Of course, the usual format would be supplemented by Australian professional societies in Medicine, Allied Health and Engineering.
