Download

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To explore the care and support for pregnant women with female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) offered in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and Switzerland; countries where it is recognised as a health issue, in order to inform midwifery practice in Australia.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Visiting well established FGM/C specialist clinics in England, Wales, Ireland, Belgium and Switzerland

• Being granted permission to sit in appointments and listen to the incredible and unique stories women have about their experiences with FGM/C

• Meeting extraordinary midwives who have devoted a great deal of their lives to ensure that women affected by FGM/C have a rewarding and woman-focused pregnancy and birth experience

• Attending the End FGM education conference in London and networking with passionate people that support women, families and communities affected by FGM/C

• Being invited to the National FGM Centre in London to discuss the work they do to support women, their families, communities and professionals who have been affected by FGM/C and child abuse linked to faith or belief

• Visiting Winston Churchill’s birthplace

• Speaking with community advocates, psychologists, psychosexual counsellors, obstetricians, gynaecologists and social workers across six countries, without whom FGM/C specialist services would not be possible

• Speaking with Obstetric/Gynaecologist world expert on FGM/C, Dr Jasmine Abdulcadir. Her passion and humility about the work that she has been doing to support women with FGM/C around the world is inspiring and I feel extremely honoured to have had this opportunity

• Visiting the United Nations in Geneva
