Recommendations:

I met some very inspiring people and saw many memorable programs.  Based on what I saw, this report makes five recommendations - that Commonwealth agencies:

  1. Articulate the Commonwealth’s health and justice interests and objectives;
  2. Provide leadership around sharing of justice mental health data and evidence;
  3. Lead the development of quality improvement processes for justice mental health;
  4. Improve continuity of care and connection between social policy areas; and
  5. Bring lived experience of justice settings into mental health.

In each of these areas in this report I highlight examples which demonstrate the value of taking these steps, and I discuss the applicability of these in the Australian context.  I believe that these five areas are of high priority to address the structural separation of prison mental health from the national mental health system, and would assist in tackling some of the factors which currently limit improvements in prison mental health services.
