The Winston Churchill Trust (Trust) and the Centre for Policy Futures at the University of Queensland (UQ) are very pleased to announce the Policy Impact Program Fellows for 2021-22.
On the back of a very successful inaugural Policy Impact Program (PIP), we are delighted to continue the program to identify, curate and advocate a selection of ideas from Churchill Fellows that have the potential to shape best practice and policy reform on a variety of relevant and contemporary issues facing Australia. The flagship of the program is the annual publication Policy Futures: A Reform Agenda.
This year we received 26 applications from Churchill Fellows, covering a broad range of topics. The selection process has been a challenging but rigorous one, and though a very difficult task to choose one application over another, given the very high standard and strong policy relevance of applications, the following 10 Fellows have been chosen to further develop their ideas with the Program in 2021-22.

- Rebecca Lyons (TAS, 2018) To investigate human relationships to death and ceremony through alternate approaches and technologies

- Clement Ng (NT, 2016) To study mental health courts and other justice responses to youth with mental health issues

- Maida Stewart (NT, 2018) The Bob and June Prickett Churchill Fellowship to examine healthy housing initiatives in the primary prevention of Acute Rheumatic Fever

- Niroshini Kennedy (VIC, 2018) The Jack Brockhoff Foundation Churchill Fellowship to investigate integrated models of care for Aboriginal children in out-of-home care

- Declan Page (SA, 2010) To assess natural treatment systems for Australian applications in water supply and water recycling

- Belinda Cook (WA, 2016) To research the growing global Indigenous fashion industry to support a Kimberley textile industry

- Steven Caruana (NSW, 2017) To enhance best practice inspection methodologies for oversight bodies with an Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture focus

- Angela Rintoul (VIC, 2018) To investigate international lessons for public health policy and improved regulation of gambling

- Jeremy Wiggins (VIC, 2016) To investigate models of health service delivery to transgender and gender diverse populations

- Julie Dunbabin (TAS, 2018) The Elvie Munday Churchill Fellowship to investigate factors that enable school lunch programs to impact positively on student health and wellbeing
These PIP Fellows will now be provided with opportunities to develop their skills in policy and governance, identify and engage with relevant government leaders, extend their networks, and learn how to improve the context-specificity of their findings. This will include participating in a training workshop provided by UQ – Getting Research into Policy and Practice (GRiPP), followed by the opportunity to develop their ideas alongside leading policy experts for contribution as an article in Policy Futures: A Reform Agenda, to be published in 2022.

It is truly inspiring to see the many ways in which Fellows across many topics and sectors are passionately pursuing and sharing their Fellowship findings for the betterment of Australian communities. We applaud you all for the great work you are doing and hope you will keep telling us about it.
