Andrew Polkinghorne: Turning Tough Soils into Better Harvests

01 Apr 2026

South Australian farmer and Churchill Fellow Andrew Polkinghorne is featured in Winston’s Harvest, a national video series from the Winston Churchill Trust Australia showcasing Australians driving innovation in food, agriculture and horticulture.

Through his 2023 Churchill Fellowship, Polkinghorne investigated how international farmers are using fluid fertilisers to improve productivity on calcareous soils — a major challenge across parts of South Australia. His research is now helping inform Australian trials aimed at improving nutrient efficiency, boosting crop yields and reducing environmental impact.

The Winston’s Harvest series highlights how Churchill Fellows are applying global knowledge to practical challenges facing Australian industries and communities.

“Andrew’s work demonstrates how practical knowledge gathered overseas can be directly applied to challenges faced by local growers,” said Christine Dacey, CEO of the Winston Churchill Trust Australia.
