It’s no secret that our ways of communication have changed. Our earliest Fellows would have shared their learnings—or insights, discoveries, even findings—via postcards, word of mouth, a few phone calls, or perhaps a snippet in the local paper. Fast forward twenty years and the landscape has shifted—reports are now online, stories spread across the interweb, and social media has become the go-to place to stay connected. Today, with just a swipe of a finger, you can share your Fellowship journey instantly with the world.

Social media has become the global town square. Over 5 billion people now use social platforms, and surveys indicate that around 60% of Australians rely on social media as their main source of news and information. That’s a huge audience—and a fantastic opportunity for Fellows to showcase their projects and reach new audiences.

For the Trust, being active on social media isn’t just about keeping up—it’s about ensuring that the incredible work of our Fellows reaches as many people as possible. By highlighting Fellow achievements online, we can engage new audiences, inspire future applicants, and demonstrate the enduring value of Churchill Fellowships to the wider Australian community. Social media allows us to amplify individual stories into a collective voice, illustrating the real impact of nearly 60 years of Fellowships.

That’s why the Churchill Trust encourages Fellows to share their stories. Platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and X (Twitter) have taken this to a whole new level. Posting a photo of a community workshop, sharing a quick video from a lab visit, or writing a short reflection after a big meeting allows your supporters to come along for the ride in real time. It’s not just about showing where you’ve been — it’s about showing the impact you’re making.

And here’s the best part: those posts don’t vanish into the ether. They help you create a living record of your Fellowship. When you sit down to write your final report, you’ll find your reflections, highlights, and even your challenges waiting there in your feed. Some Fellows even weave their social updates into their final reports, making them richer and more personal.

Of course, sharing comes with a few ground rules. Stay safe—don’t broadcast your exact travel plans before you go. Think about timing: sometimes it’s better to post after you’ve left a place. Always respect others’ privacy. And make sure every update is something you’d be happy for your community, colleagues, and even your grandma to read.

So, what works best? Keep posts short, upbeat, and visual. A clear photo or quick video is far more engaging than a wall of text. Mix professional milestones with snippets of local culture—your network will love seeing both.

Check out these Fellows who are already nailing it.
