To explore international best practice to improve Australia's approach to wrongful detention

The wrongful detention of Australian citizens abroad for purposes of political, diplomatic or economic leverage has increased in recent years. In 2021 Australia signed Canada's Declaration Against the Use of Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations, however has made little progress in developing a framework to disincentivise the practice. This project seeks to investigate international best practice approaches to the issue of wrongful detention with the aim of better informing Australia's current policies, including in preventing wrongful arrest from the outset, improving strategy once an Australian is wrongfully detained and ensuring their successful reintegration into Australian society post-release.
