The Brookings Institute wrote last year that democracy in the United States was in serious trouble, while the Reuters Digital Report warned that distrust in news is intrinsically linked to politics. This decline is being felt worldwide, including here in Australia as politicians import phrases like “fake news.” The explosion of misinformation deliberately aimed at disrupting the democratic process has confused and overwhelmed voters. This project aims to explore strategies that both public broadcasters and the commercial media in the US, UK and Finland are using to restore trust in democratic institutions. This would help to shape the ABC’s political coverage in the lead-up to the 2025 federal election.
