Taking action to reduce greenhouse emissions can be difficult and risks leaving some sections of the community behind. Often the longer term 'gains' from action are outweighed politically by the shorter term pain to workers and communities who stand to lose jobs or economic activity. Unions and some governments globally have advocated for a 'Just Transition' away from fossil fuels which involves affected workers and communities in a dialogue about how any phase out will happen and how they will be supported in the process. My project involves visiting some of the most successful just transition collaborations, distilling lessons of their success and considering their applicability to Australian contexts.
