University of Canberra Churchill Fellowship to inform my practice with world-leading experts in advanced composites and precision manufacturing in the United States and Canada

I seek to travel overseas to shadow and learn from composite industry leaders who produce world-class bespoke products in carbon fibre. I'll learn techniques, methodologies, and processes (on a high level) and form long-lasting contacts with aligned industries and professionals. I intend to work alongside designers, fabrication technicians and business leaders working in their product manufacturers and bespoke/ adaptive sporting practices. Through shadowing, co-work and professional development I’ll bring back cutting-edge methods and practices that I’ll implement in my practice. This will increase innovation and commercial outcomes leading to scale-up, employing a team, and eventually export of my products.

Report Summary

David Barbalet investigated what is required to achieve a critical transition: from creating one-off prototypes to establishing commercially viable, repeatable product manufacturing. The Fellowship involved studying the link between product-led growth, manufacturing technologies, innovation, ergonomics and business sustainability.

David's report includes a strategic roadmap for Australian innovation, with direct application to the systemic barriers faced by Para athletes. The findings offer a tangible plan to provide reliable, locally made equipment, and to overcome product availability and resource limitations through efficient, scalable Australian manufacturing. David's goal is to establish a commercial pipeline for world-class para-athletics wheelchairs, directly supporting performance outcomes for the upcoming 2028 Paralympics.
