On Monday 5 December, an awards ceremony was held at Government House Norfolk Island with the CEO of the Winston Churchill Trust and Assistant Administrator of Norfolk Island. The ceremony was to award new Churchill Fellowships and Medallions to Norfolk Islanders who have been driving change in their areas of passion.

This year, Norfolk Island Churchill Fellows included:

Jodie Williams who is launching a new growth platform of sound art compositions with mental health support channels. Jodie will be working with the NorfolkIsland Hospital and Residential Aged Care Service, supporting aged care patients and those travelling offshore with music therapy listening devices. These are gifted and include a customised and personalised library of Norfolk sound heritage and soundscape recordings.

Emilee Nicolai was awarded her Churchill Medallion for completing her Fellowship to investigate agro-tourism opportunities to encourage small farm innovation in isolated areas and she visited France, Italy and the UK. Emilee’s report is here

Rebekah Gupte received a certificate as a new 2022 Fellow, and for Rebekah’s Fellowship she will be travelling to Australia and New Zealand to establish a community owned, not-for-profit, food processing facility for Norfolk Island.

The Winston Churchill Trust was set up in 1965 after Winston Churchill passed away, and the Australian public gave generously in what was one of Australia’s most successful door-knock appeals. Since then, the Winston Churchill Trust has sent more than 4,500 Aussies overseas (including more than 40 from Norfolk Island) to pursue their passion and bring their learnings back to Australia.

The Winston Churchill Trust invites Norfolk Islanders to apply for a Churchill Fellowship, where you can travel the world to pursue your passion and bring your learnings back to Australia. New applications open 1 March 2023.
