The Churchill Trust is pleased to announce a new sponsored Churchill Fellowship to be offered this year, to honour the late Barbara Dunstan, which encourages projects that focus on the themes of peace and reconciliation between First Nations and settler communities; supporting reconciliation after international conflict; and building international friendship and peace to avert future conflict.

Churchill Fellowships offer people from all walks of life an opportunity to travel overseas for four to eight weeks, to explore a topic or issue that they are passionate about. No qualifications are needed to apply for a Churchill Fellowship and there are no limits to the topics of proposed projects, as long as applicants can demonstrate a benefit to Australia and willingness to share their findings with the community.

The Barbara Dunstan Churchill Fellowship for themes of peace and reconciliation has been made possible through the generosity of her son Chris Dunstan. A Churchill Fellow himself, Mr. Dunstan approached the Churchill Trust wanting to honour his mother who passed away on 31 December 2021, aged 98.

A loving mother to five and grandmother to eight, Mrs. Dunstan never engaged in formal politics, but abhorred conflict and violence and sought to create peace, healing, and reconciliation for those around her throughout her life. Mrs. Dunstan was known for her kindness, compassion and strong sense of justice.

“The Churchill Trust is honoured that Mr. Dunstan has sponsored a Fellowship to create an enduring legacy for Mrs. Dunstan’s commitment to peace, healing and reconciliation,” said Adam Davey, CEO of the Winston Churchill Trust. “We look forward to the many positive impacts this Fellowship will have on peace and reconciliation initiatives for years to come.”
