Andrew Christian believes that Australia is well placed to become a substantial producer of Asparagosis algae and assist in reducing methane gas production in ruminant animals along with other environmental benefits. Having been awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2019, Andrew will travel to the USA, Canada and Ireland to research the commercialisation of an Asparagopsis industry in Australia.
Having worked within various aquaculture sectors since 1999, Andrew has experienced the challenges faced in progressing new industries such as farmed Green Lip Abalone and the redesigning of Pacific Oyster hatchery systems after Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome [POMS] prevented spat being brought into South Australia from Tasmania.
Andrew runs two successful businesses on the Lower Eyre Peninsula in South Australia and believes opening up a new aquaculture industry will bring financial, employment and environmental benefits to seaside communities.
