Jasmine Jan

Jasmine Jan is a dedicated artist who has always had an interest in wildlife, art and conservation.

Jasmine completed her Science degree whilst undertaking a traineeship in the Natural Sciences Division at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Jasmine successfully won a position as a zookeeper at the Territory Wildlife Park, working in the Aquarium and has worked at the Territory Wildlife Park for the last twenty nine years in a variety of roles from zookeeping, marketing, education and interpretation, community engagement.

Jasmine is currently employed as the General Manager Visitor Services there. Jasmine’s current focus and speciality is in the design, development and facilitation of community art projects that have a conservation focus. Major projects at the Territory Wildlife Park that have involved the community and local artists include – The Crocheted Coral Reef project, The Felted Forest Atlas moth project, The Prehistoric Nature Playground mosaics, The Black-footed Tree Rat Postcards and most recently the Aquarium Habitat Panels. Jasmine has also worked extensively on an ongoing project with Berry Springs Primary School called the Growing Green Kids Project which has covered areas such as endangered species and sustainability and recycling. She is currently working with the school to establish a plastics recycling hub at the Territory Wildlife Park.

In 1990 and 1992 she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Trust Fellowship and travelled to the USA to study scientific/wildlife illustration techniques with leading illustrators in Philadelphia and Maine. Since then, she has won several awards and scholarships that have assisted her in returning to the United States to study and train with leading scientific and wildlife illustrators from all over the country. Jasmine was the 2007 State Winner for Small Business Champion Awards.

Jasmine works in a range of art mediums, ranging from graphite, coloured pencil, chalk pastel, watercolour, printmaking and kiln formed and lamp-worked glass. Her watercolour works have a distinct East-West fusion style. Jasmine runs numerous weekend workshops and has taught at the adult night classes at Casuarina Adult Night School, sharing knowledge and techniques. She has been invited on several occasions to teach specialist art classes to several High Schools and Primary Schools in Darwin. Jasmine has also been a guest lecturer at the Charles Darwin University to architectural and design students.

Jasmine has exhibited locally, interstate and overseas and her work has been acquired by private collectors, corporate business, and government institutions. Her work can currently be seen in the Artists run shop in Parap, Darwin called The Local.
