Joel Dignam is the Executive Director of Better Renting, a community of renters working together for stable, affordable, and healthy homes. Having founded Better Renting in 2018, Joel has spent the intervening years advocating on key issues affecting renters including the standard of rental housing, government responses to COVID, and protections around rent increases and evictions. Joel won the 2018 Gill Owen Essay prize for a paper on minimum energy efficiency standards for rental homes, and he won the 2019 Gill Owen Scholarship to research social policy issues related to household electrification.

Prior to founding Better Renting, Joel worked in climate advocacy organisations, with a focus on community organising. He was a founding co-director of the SA branch of the AYCC, and subsequently worked with United Voice, the ACT Greens, and Climate Action Network Australia. In 2017 he studied "Leadership, Organizing and Action" through the Harvard Kennedy school.

When relaxing at home Joel enjoys playing board games, swinging kettlebells, and reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction works.
