Dr. Rebecca Heath (MBChB, FACEM, BSc, MRes, DipMtnMed) was awarded the 2020 MPST Churchill Fellowship to establish the first Geriatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship in Australia. Rebecca currently works as a specialist in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital but has lived and worked as a doctor in four different countries during her medical career. Rebecca chose Geriatric Emergency Medicine as a sub-speciality because she believes older patients are some of the most vulnerable and their care requires an additional awareness of their different needs.

Tasmania’s population is the oldest and fastest aging in Australia so the Royal Hobart Hospital is perfectly positioned as an optimal site to support additional training in Geriatric Emergency Medicine for doctors training in Emergency Medicine. Geriatric Emergency medicine fellowships have been running internationally for up to a decade. Rebecca aims to learn from those running fellowships so that she can set up one that Emergency Medicine trainees in Australasia can rotate through, annually, and develop additional skills to provide optimal care for our older patients in Emergency Departments.
