The AV Jennings Churchill Fellowship to investigate alternative, affordable models of housing that could help older Australians to age-in-place featured image

Older people (a significant and growing proportion of Australians) are a highly diverse group with different housing needs and aspirations. Well located, desirable retirement housing is unaffordable for all but the relatively wealthy, requiring considerable upfront capital. Limited alternative options include principally to stay in the (often unsuitable) family home, move to a retirement village (affordable options are often inappropriately designed and/or poorly located), or to residential care. This project will explore how and why alternative models overseas (e.g. purpose-built multigenerational housing, co-housing, shared equity housing) are successful and how they can be implemented in Australia.
